Before starting a project, it is easy to describe why it could work. Describing what would make you stop can feel disloyal to the idea. It is also a way to protect the reasons you chose it.
A stopping condition is not a prediction of failure. It is a statement about what this commitment is allowed to ask of you. It turns “we will see how it goes” into something you can revisit.
Use a condition you can recognise.
“Stop if it feels wrong” may be meaningful, but it is difficult to discuss. “Pause if the work repeatedly displaces the delivery dates we promised existing clients” points to an observable conflict. You still need to define what counts as repeatedly and who reviews it.
Do not invent a precise measure merely to sound disciplined. Sometimes a written account of the trade-off is more honest than a score. What matters is that the condition refers to the reason for proceeding.
Separate a problem from a changed premise.
A difficult first week may be part of the work. A partner becoming unavailable may change the entire arrangement. Ask whether the problem is something the original decision allowed for or whether a condition that made the decision acceptable has disappeared.
In a fictional collaboration, one person agrees to delivery and the other to customer communication. If the second person cannot continue, the first has a new decision. Continuing silently is not the same arrangement with a little more effort.
Give the review an owner.
Write who will notice the condition, who can pause the work, and when the people affected will hear about it. If stopping creates obligations, arrange the relevant professional review before relying on a simple exit sentence.
A review date asks you to look again. A stopping condition tells you what you are looking for.
A short note before you begin
- I am choosing this because…
- It remains workable only while…
- The earliest sign that this is changing would be…
- If that happens, my next action is…
- I will review it with… on…
You can change a stopping condition when circumstances change. Record the new reason explicitly. That gives your future self something better than a sequence of exceptions to reconstruct.
